Power Search Using Google’s Advanced Options

Power Searching with Google is described as a “short course” that takes place in six sessions, each 50-minute long. Twitter Went Down By Bug

Twitter blamed an internal error for a large outage that took the popular microblogging service offline for a couple of hours yesterday.

The outage began after noon Eastern Time, before service was briefly restored to its 140 million+ users about an hour later, only to go down for a second time just a half hour later. By 2:08 p.m., it was all systems tweet, leading to #WhenTwitterWentDown and #WhileTwitterWasDown becoming trending topics in the aftermath.

“Today’s outage is due to a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components,” the company said shortly after service had been restored, emphasizing that the site wasn’t hacked.

The cascaded software bug caused a failure across other systems, which lead to an outage or slowdown for the entire service, Twitter explained

“One of the characteristics of such a bug is that it can have a significant impact on all users, worldwide, which was the case today,” Twitter explained in blog post. “As soon as we discovered it, we took corrective actions, which included rolling back to a previous stable version of Twitter.”

Twitter fails have been extremely rare this year.

“Twitter’s website has had more downtime today than it had the entire year to date before today,” Peter Alguacil, an analyst at online monitoring firm Pingdom, told USA yesterday.

Twitter echoed that, noting “For the past six months, we’ve enjoyed our highest marks for site reliability and stability ever: at least 99.96% and often 99.99%. In simpler terms, this means that in an average 24-hour period, twitter.com has been stable and available to everyone for roughly 23 hours, 59 minutes and 40-ish seconds. Not today though.”

Google Finds 9,500 Approx New Malicious Websites Daily

Somewhere between 12 million and 14 million Google searches every day trigger warnings about “compromised” sites, while dedicated attack websites built to distribute malware are on the rise, according to a new Google security report that gathers five years’ worth of data.

Google’s figures revealed that dedicated attack websites are on a comeback after declining in numbers in 2011. The websites try to avoid detection by Google’s Safe Browsing service by adopting several techniques, such as “rapidly changing their location through free web hosting, dynamic DNS records, and automated generation of new domain names”.

Google said that social media is now the weapon of choice for many attackers, as technical exploits are becoming harder to perform.

“As companies have designed browsers and plugins to be more secure over time, malware purveyors have also employed social engineering, where the malware author tries to deceive the user into installing malicious software without the need for any software vulnerabilities,” Google’s analysis said.

“While we see socially engineered attacks still trailing behind drive by downloads in frequency, this is a fast-growing category likely due to improved browser security.”

The data also reveals that phishing websites discovered monthly are becoming more prevelant, reaching a five-year high in 2012 of 300,000 websites.

Google finds an average of 9,500 new malicious websites every day, some of which are innocent websites that have been compromised by malware authors, and others that are built specifically for malware distribution or phishing.

But it isn’t all as bad as it sounds, as the study shows that the prevalence of infected websites peaked in 2009 and has since declined from approximately 350,000 by more than half to only 150,000 websites discovered monthly.

Black Hat SEO Techniques We Can Use

q. New exploits – Locate them and report them, and also blog about them. You could break the story and also acquire all the attention plus links.

Robots.txt File and SEO

When it comes to SEO, most people understand that a website must have content, “search engine friendly” site architecture/HTML, and meta data (title tags and meta descriptions).

Another meta element, if implemented incorrectly, that can also trip up websites is robots.txt. I was recently reminded of this while reviewing the website of a large company that had spent considerable money on building a mobile version of their website, on a sub-directory. That’s fine, but having a disallow statement in their robots.txt file meant that the website wasn’t accessible to search engines (Disallow: /mobile/)

Let’s review how to properly implement robots.txt to avoid search ranking problems and damaging your business, as well as how to correctly disallow search engine crawling.

Robots.txt File?

Simply put, if you go to domain.com/robots.txt, you should see a list of directories of the website that the site owner is asking the search engines to “skip” (or “disallow”). However, if you aren’t careful when editing a robots.txt file, you could be putting information in your robots.txt file that could really hurt your business.

There’s tons of information about the robots.txt file available at the Web Robots Pages, including the proper usage of the disallow feature, and blocking “bad bots” from indexing your website.

The general rule of thumb is to make sure a robots.txt file exists at the root of your domain (e.g., domain.com/robots.txt). To exclude all robots from indexing part of your website, your robots.txt file would look something like this:

* Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /tmp/
Disallow: /junk/

The above syntax would tell all robots not to index the /cgi-bin/, the /tmp/, and the /junk/ directories on your website.

Robots.txt Dos and Don’ts:

There are many good reasons to stop the search engines from indexing certain directories on a website and allowing others for SEO purposes. Let’s look at some examples.

Do with robots.txt:

• Look for certain files on your site that you might want to disallow the search engines from indexing, such as certain scripts, or files that might contain email addresses, phone numbers, or other sensitive data.
